Third Grade

June 2008

Dear Parents,

This is the last letter for the school year. In one way it is hard to believe we are already at the end, and on the other hand, it seemed to slip by so quickly. This is the end of our journey together as a class. It has been a fantastic two years. I feel so privileged to have worked with your children and to have guided them along the way. Parents, you are awesome. Your support over the years has helped to make my job a continuum of the learning experience. Thanks to everyone for all the little and big things you have done. It never goes unnoticed or unappreciated. A special thanks to Ester Ohlgisser, for being the room mom for two years and for all the trips she has made to recycle the plastic that was brought in. It was significantly helpful to us.

Our Mitzvah project, "Pups for Peace" earned $1,014.68. Thanks to the generosity of the entire class.

I hope everyone has a fantastic summer. Encourage you child to read and write during the summer. There is a reading list with suggested books. Writing can be in the form of journal writing so they are writing on a regular basis. If you are traveling, your child can write down their experiences, sights they see, and all the wonderful things they want to remember. The third grade students should keep practicing their multiplication and division facts throughout the summer.

My door will always continue to be open to anyone at anytime.

Shalom,
Ms Arvey

Hebrew and Judaic Studies

Dear Third and Fourth Grade Parents,

Some of you may have already met me. My name is Meirav Zadok, and I joined Weizmann Day School's faculty three weeks ago. I teach the 4th and 6th grade Hebrew and Judaic studies for 3rd, 4th and 6th grades. Additionally, I work with Ms. Soffer in third grade Hebrew.

I am a mother of two children: a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl. I am a graduate of the teacher seminary of Tel-Aviv University. We came from Israel to Pasadena 9 month ago. My husband is a post-doc at Caltech.

In the Hebrew class we have been learning about Yom HaAzmaut and working on reading and writing text regarding "Yom HaAzmaut". We threw a "birthday party" in which each child had to give the State of Israel a present.

In the Judaic studies class we have been learning about the Menorah. The class was divided into 6 groups, and each received different information (written in Hebrew) regarding the Menorah and composed questions to be asked to all of the other groups. We discussed the shape of the Menorah, the way they used it in the temple, the Menorah as part of Israel's official emblem, the magical power that people believed the Menorah had and the Menorah as a Jewish identification mark. In addition we also learned about Lag BaOmer. We talked about its origins and customs, and about Bar- Kokhba, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Shimon bar-Yohai.

It is a pleasure to work with your children. I am very happy to be part of Weizmann Day School.

Sincerely yours,
Meirav Zadok
